Ensure is safe to drink during pregnancy in moderation.

If you’re someone struggling through a severe case of morning sickness, drinks like Ensure might be your lifeline. When your appetite is low and you can barely keep any food down, shakes and smoothies are your friend.

With that said, Ensure is a processed beverage, which means it may contain some ingredients that may or may not be harmful to a growing baby1 —we simply just don’t have enough research to say for sure. So it’s likely best to limit pre-made shakes like this to at most once a day.

If you are relying on liquids to help get you through, a healthier alternative is to make your own homemade shakes or smoothies. When you make it yourself, you know exactly what’s going to be feeding you and your baby. Don't forget to add a protein source, which can come from ingredients like plain pasteurized2  whey powder or Greek yogurt.
